The vendor pays a third party to buy their goods using fictitious customer accounts that they have set up. The item is delivered to a legitimate address after the sale. The vendor can then use the fictitious Amazon buyer account to provide a favorable review of their own goods.

For any Amazon merchant, reviews are crucial. A product will rank higher in Amazon’s algorithm the more reviews it receives and the better the reviews are. That increases the product’s visibility and could result in more sales. Additionally, vendors who use brushing scams may occasionally post what is known as “verified purchase reviews.” 

Anyone with an Amazon account can post a review for any item, but the algorithm gives more weight to those that were really purchased. And Amazon only assigns such labels to reviews if it can verify that the product was purchased from the reviewer’s account at full price.

Brushing fraud peaked in the middle of the decade

According to CNN Business, brushing fraud peaked in the middle of the decade. Since then, numerous instances of brushing have been made public. 

For more than six months, a woman in Thousand Oaks, California, received random Amazon shipments every two weeks. The goods in the parcels ranged from a briefcase to a coffee cup warmer to a hair straightener. According to CBS News, a couple in Massachusetts received one or two items every week for five months. Unwanted Amazon shipments included a computer vacuum cleaner, Bluetooth speakers, a torch, and a humidifier.

Uninvited gifts are lawfully yours to keep, according to the United States Postal Inspection Service. Therefore, you are not required to return any packages you get. If you decide not to use a package, you can donate it to a worthy charity. You and other customers are still at risk from Amazon brushing. A short skit was posted on social media by the UAE Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority warning citizens that the scam is catching on among locals. 

Abdulla advises that “some people may send you an SMS with a link posing as an Amazon order,” adding that the link then requests users to provide their personal ID information. Then, viewers are warned on-screen not to enter their personal information into SMS links. Always double-check with the Amazon app or website.

  2. Your mother’s maiden name or other identifying details, like the name of your preferred pet or the place where you were born
  3. Your Seller Central or Amazon password
  • Check the email for typographical or grammatical errors: Keep an eye out for grammatical or typing problems. Many phishing emails are either sent without being proofread or translated from another language.
  • Authentic emails from Amazon will always have a return address that ends in “@amazon.com” or one of the mentioned email addresses. Look at the email’s header data. The email is not from Amazon if it has one of the aforementioned sources for “received from,” “respond to,” or “return path.” You can usually view the email’s source in an email program. Depending on the email application you use, you can examine the header information in a different way.
